Every glass of water and every cube of ice the machine produces passes through one cartridge. Its job is to pull sediment, chlorine taste, and odor out of the line before the water reaches the ice maker. When the filter is fresh, ice comes out clear and the water tastes like nothing at all.
Los Angeles water does that cartridge no favors. Most of the city runs hard, and we regularly pull filters from homes in the hills that were fully spent months before anyone noticed. The decline follows a familiar order. Ice goes cloudy first. Then the cubes shrink. Then production slows to a trickle, and eventually someone in the house mentions that the water has started tasting like the refrigerator. By that point the filter stopped filtering a long while ago, and a starved ice maker is one of the most common service calls we run.

Ethylene is the ripening gas that produce breathes out, the reason one brown banana takes the whole bowl down with it. Inside a sealed refrigerator it builds up and hurries everything along. Scrub it out and produce simply lasts longer, herbs and berries most noticeably.
The cartridge lasts about a year, and the unit posts an indicator when it is done. The swap takes less than a minute. Old one out, new one in, reset the light. If your greens have started wilting early, check this cartridge before you blame anything else.
The rest of the routine
Two cartridges a year is most of the job. Three habits finish it. The condenser needs a cleaning every three to six months, more often with pets in the house, and more often near the coast, where salt air is rough on the coils. A coil buried in dust makes the compressor run hot. If a Vacuum Condenser message ever appears, the unit is already running warm, so clean the coil right away rather than waiting for the reminder. Door gaskets need only a wipe with warm water and a check that they still pull tight. A leaking seal means frost, sweat, and a compressor that never gets to rest. The defrost drain gets a glance twice a year. A clogged drain is the most common reason we find water on a kitchen floor.
