What is going on
An empty ice bin has a way of announcing itself at the worst moment, right before guests arrive or at the end of a long day when you simply want a cold drink. A Sub-Zero ice maker that stops producing is one of the most common calls we take across Los Angeles, and in nearly every case it is fixable, cleanly and quickly, without drama.
Sub-Zero builds its ice systems into a sealed, precisely balanced refrigeration platform, which is exactly why they run quietly for years and exactly why a fault deserves a specialist. Water supply, fill, freeze, and harvest each depend on the others, so the symptom rarely points to the cause. Our factory trained technicians test the full sequence, isolate the true failure, and correct it with genuine Sub-Zero parts, not guesswork.
The usual suspects
What causes it in a Sub-Zero.
Water inlet valve
A solenoid valve meters water into the ice mold on each cycle. When it weakens or clogs with mineral scale, cubes come out small, hollow, or not at all. We test flow and pressure, then fit the genuine Sub-Zero valve.
Fill tube freeze
The small tube that delivers water to the mold can ice over when flow or temperature drifts, silently starving the maker. We clear the blockage, then trace and correct the underlying condition so the freeze does not simply return.
Module and harvest motor
The control module and motor sequence the freeze and harvest cycle, ejecting cubes at the right moment. When either fails, ice forms but never drops. We test the cycle electrically and replace the failed component with factory parts.
Water filter clog
Sub-Zero units filter every drop before it reaches the ice system. An overdue cartridge restricts flow, producing thin, cloudy, or slow ice. We measure the restriction, replace the filter, and verify full production through complete cycles before we leave.
A Sub-Zero is engineered as one sealed, integrated system rather than a collection of interchangeable parts. Generic components and improvised fixes create repeat failures in machines built to this standard. Factory trained diagnosis protects the refrigeration platform around the ice maker, resolves the actual fault, and preserves the performance you paid for.
Restore the rhythm
Ice runs out quietly, then all at once.
A dead ice maker is a quiet inconvenience that compounds. Bagged ice runs, drinks served warm, dinners hosted around a machine that is not doing its part. None of it is a crisis, and none of it should become your routine. One visit typically resolves it, and your kitchen goes back to working the way it should.

Questions, answered
Before you call.
How fast can you get here?
Same day service is available across most of our territory. When you call before midday we typically schedule a visit that afternoon. Your technician arrives with genuine Sub-Zero components on hand, so most ice maker repairs are diagnosed and completed in a single appointment.
Should I do anything before the technician arrives?
Nothing is required. If ice remains in the bin, leave it where it is. The size and shape of the last cubes the maker produced tell their own story, and your technician reads them as part of the diagnosis. Keep the refrigerator running as normal.
Will you tell me if it is not worth repairing?
Yes, plainly. We are a repair company, not a sales channel, and we do not push replacements. Sub-Zero machines are built to be serviced for decades, and the honest answer is almost always a repair. If a repair ever did not serve you, we would say so.
What does the diagnosis cost?
$95 diagnostic, waived with your repair. Your technician runs the full ice system through its cycle, identifies the fault precisely, and gives you a clear quote before any work begins. Approve the repair and the diagnostic costs you nothing.
Why did my Sub-Zero stop making ice suddenly?
Usually one component in the water and harvest chain has failed, most often the inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or the control module. Occasionally it is as simple as an overdue filter. Diagnosis isolates the exact cause so we replace only what actually failed.
Is it safe to keep using the refrigerator while the ice maker is down?
Yes. The ice system is a distinct assembly within your Sub-Zero, and a fault there does not compromise cooling in the refrigerator or freezer compartments. Your food is safe. Leave the unit running as normal and we handle the ice maker when we arrive.
